On the romantic trail to Linz, Vienna and Munich. David Zinman directs the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra with Brahms and Buchbinder 1 – 5 October 2010
At the beginning of October David Zinman and the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra will travel together with pianist Rudolf Buchbinder to Austria and Germany. In their luggage will be a Brahms-only programme which they will perform at the Brucknerhaus in Linz, at the Vienna Musikverein (2 concerts) and the Gasteig in Munich.
David Zinman, who was born and educated in the USA, has been Chief Conductor of the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra for 15 years. Thanks to his highly detailed and thorough work with the orchestra, they have together developed a unique and internationally acclaimed orchestral sound with an outstanding level of musicality.
Zinman’s recordings with the orchestra are highly regarded worldwide. The complete symphonies of Ludwig van Beethoven alone have sold over a million copies. In the meantime Zinman has recorded the complete orchestral works of Richard Strauss, the four symphonies of Robert Schumann and all his concertos for piano and violin, as well as the Triple Concerto, the Romances and the Overtures of Beethoven. In November 2010 a box set of the complete symphonies of Gustav Mahler will be issued, the 9th Symphony of which appeared earlier this month. These recordings have won the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra international acknowledgement and respect.
Together with the high-calibre pianist Rudolf Buchbinder the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra will play both Piano Concertos by Johannes Brahms, op. 15 and op.83. Buchbinder receives invitations from all the big orchestras and conductors worldwide, and is a regular guest at the significant international festivals. This season he is “Artist in Residence” at the Staatskapelle Dresden. He can be heard at the Semperoper performing a concert cycle of Beethoven’s Complete Piano Sonatas.
When David Zinman isn’t conducting the Zurich Tonhalle Orchestra, he is a guest conductor with all the major orchestras in the world. In this season alone he will conduct the London Philharmonic Orchestra, the Orchestre de Paris, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Concertgebouw, the Munich Philharmonic and the Dresdner Staatskapelle.
In addition David Zinman passionately enjoys giving master-classes for conductors. 15 years ago he founded the American Academy of Conducting in Aspen. He is now planning a comparable programme for Zurich, which started this year.
Zinman has a great interest in teaching young musicians, and one example of his ability to inspire and raise enthusiasm for classical music can be seen in his extremely successful concert series “Tonhalle Late”. For seven years now young people have been able to enjoy concerts at 10pm in a relaxed atmosphere, going on afterwards to enjoy a drink at the bar or dancing until the early hours.
